Happy New Year!
2013 can you believe it? We're living in the future!!
It's also January, the month when folk feel they need to make a resolution or two.
To embark on some new fitness regime or crazy diet. I've never really made any resolutions,
I can't see the point, why set yourself up for likely failure? I mean January is a mean month!
It's cold, grey, wet and relentless. Why make yourself even more miserable? Especially as all
those chocolates received over Christmas are still calling your name through their quivering wrappers....
So what am I doing?
Yep joining in with the January cliché and detoxing by juice fasting!
This isn't me wanting to lose weight or thinking it's just the 'thing' to do - nope this is a cold
and calculated decision to get my health back on track. I have auto-immune hypothyroidism
and currently can't get pregnant again because of it. I need to get my body into a better state
and ideally get off the drugs. I've fasted before, 5 years back at Karuna Retreat in Devon, before
I had Evie and before I knew my health was truly wavering. I think I knew deep down even back
then that I needed to start looking after myself properly, that's why I went and I felt amazing afterwards.
It's pretty hard core though, seven days of fasting with colonics too, not for the faint hearted I tell you!
But the lightness and clarity of mind you feel afterwards is sensational.
I'd been contemplating going back to Karuna, but the logistics with a 3 year old is pretty impossible,
plus the cost wouldn't be truly feasible and to be honest I'd feel too selfish! So I needed another avenue.
A friend of mine Denis Fleming had just gone through 60 days of juicing. Yep you better believe it!
He wanted to make a change as he was overweight, had high cholesterol and was on blood pressure pills.
Not good. After the 60 days his blood pressure and cholesterol were normal and he'd lost 3 stone, just by
drinking juice! Check out his YouTube page here.
I then watched a series of documentaries about food and got really hooked.
Joe Cross, an Australian entrepreneur, was very overweight and had an auto-immune condition
which meant, like me, he'd be on drugs for life. He also juiced for 60 days while driving across
America making a documentary and talking to people about nutrition. His film 'Fat, Sick And Nearly Dead'
blew me away and actually brought tears to my eyes as at the end he meets a hugely overweight man,
Phil, with the same condition as him who asks for Joe's help and makes dramatic changes in his life.
Check out the trailer:
I forgot to mention that at the end of it Joe got off his medication!
Soooooo I bought a juicer!!! And decided I'd launch into a 10 day juice fast.
I then realised that I needed some juice recipes so searched around the web
I then opened up my new shiny Phillips Juicer and what else was in there but
a Juice Master book. Bonanza!
I tweeted with Jason briefly on New Years Eve and he told me about
So If you're feeling full of turkey, ham, chocolates and brussels still, give your
body a few days of respite and get some energy by juicing. The juices are super
easy to make and taste great too! What have you got to lose?
I'll let you know how the 10 days go and even get my blood tests re-taken at the end of it.
Day 1 has been fine so far, as long as I get the juices in me they quell the hunger.
