The new Boys&Girls® Spring/Summer collection is now with us and to coincide with this momentous occasion
we have Kati Martin in with us having a chat.
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Kati and I am one of the founders of Boys&Girls and a mum of 2.
I spend my days running Boys&Girls, running round after my kids and trying to see friends and family as much as possible.
What makes you laugh?
Everyday silly things make me laugh. The obstacle courses we all have to overcome each day with work & kids & school
runs etc can be very funny. The time my mum picked up my sister from school with one lense missing from her sunglasses
and proceeded to chat to other parents completely oblivious to the fact and to my sisters mortification, still makes me chuckle
more than 20 years after the event! TV programmes like The Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner also make me giggle.
Also wine. I try to laugh as much as possible.
Any excuse really.
Where do you get your daily inspiration?
It sounds a bit naff (and a bit middle aged!), but I go for a short run first thing most mornings & I find checking in with the
universe and noticing how great it looks is an inspiring way to start the day. Work-wise, inspiration comes from lots of
different places; the internet, magazines, my kids, the playground, street art, local markets. The East End is bursting
with interesting things and people so I don’t have to look very far
Where's your favourite place in the whole wide world?
The Balearic Island of Formentera is pretty magical. Amazing beaches, beautiful light and very chilled atmosphere.
As a child, did you like dressing up?
Absolutely. My favourite costume was an amazing traditional Aladdin-like outfit from Baghdad a relative bought me.
I would spend hours dancing around the living room to a record of the Sheherazade symphony.
Do you go out much without the kids? If so where? (we're not stalking you, honest)
I do go out quite regularly now the kids are a bit older and I have a bit more energy. We tend to stay local in
East London so favourite haunts include Bistrotheque and Ombra, Platform Bar, Shoreditch House, Rich Mix
Cinema and The Palm Tree pub.
What's your favourite film?
I don’t think I have a favourite. There are so many brilliant films I really don’t think I can choose just 1.
What food is evocative of your childhood?
Ribena (cold, hot & frozen), dippy eggs with bread soldiers, casserole, baked bananas, toast & marmalade (home-made),
Curly Wurly’s, Jelly Tots, Cheddar Spread, Angle Delight and Bran (my mum went through a phase of putting a spoonful
Do you have a special talent ?
Parallel Parking and Cup Cakes are the 2 things I do best – do they count?
A holiday please..!
Thank you so much Kati for taking the time to chat with us. The story about your mum made us laugh a lot and we most
certainly think that parallel parking is a special talent. We're really excited about your new collection, you definitely deserve
a holiday now!
* We've also gone up to age 4-5 years in this range! Yipee!
